Return of Sergeant Janick Gilbert

Today marked the return of Search and Rescue Technician Sergeant Janick Gilbert to 8 Wing Trenton from Nunavut, where he perished whilst performing a rescue operation near Igloolik.

I've never attended one of the repatriations of Canadian soldiers, despite being so near the base, but I will likely do so next week when the another soldier is coming home in the way so many never want to see.

With a six foot fence and no media allowed on tarmac, it was a challenge, to say the least. But I'm glad I went.

Then and Now: Toronto

Another thing I managed to complete while in Toronto over the first bit of reading week was a then and now assignment. Browsing the Toronto photo archives was incredible enough, but finding a building that was still standing and still recognisable is really hard in that city. So much modernisation, or fires, killed off a lot of the old beauties. Anyway, I found one really interesting one at the southeast corner of Dundas and Yonge, in Toronto's version of Times Square.

Zombie Walk

Yesterday I hit up Toronto's annual zombie walk. It was a little ridiculous, and I'm pretty sure most of the people there are huge attention-seekers. But it was fun, and I got off a few shots of random people pretending to be zombies.

Man's best friend

BELLEVILLE, Ont. (19/10/11) - Joe Mucha has been "borrowing" dogs to bring to the dog park in Zwick's Park in Belleville ever since his own dog died two years ago. Today he brought his roommate's beagle Noodles, who would rather sit on the bench with Mucha than run and play. Photo by Rachel Psutka.

I recently had an assignment due called Shoot Your Weakness. If you think this sounds like misery, it really was. I didn't want to cop out and say, well, I'm not the best at studio lighting! I actually wanted to challenge myself. Of course this meant I overworked myself and overthought how I should go about shooting my weakness, which is really portraits and candids in feature situations. I don't know what it is about these, but having to (a) control a situation that much, and (b) go out of my way to make something into a good picture while feeling like I'm bothering someone really bothers me. After several failed attempts and some words of wisdom from friends and instructors, I went back to the dog park for a second time and found Joe doing a crossword while Noodles alternated watching Joe and between pacing back and forth between two trees.

They are two peas in a pod.

World Record Pumpkin

Despite the horrible weather this morning, a few fellow photojs and I went to Prince Edward County's Pumpkinfest out in Wellington. The day was a bit crazy, especially with the downpour/sunshine mix and the moving of the weighing to a barn well out of town.

However, we stayed for a while, watched a few things get weighed, then were on our way to something else. And while I didn't see it weighed, seeing this behemoth get lifted off a truck and admired by men who regularly grow thousand-pound pumpkins was enough to know that it was special.

Leafs take Trenton

The Toronto Maple Leafs were at CFB Trenton starting on Monday to do some practices and show off their skills to the large fan base up here. And when I say large, I mean that spectators had to be shuffled in and out of the arena in crowds and only got to watch for 20-30 minutes before the next crowd could come in. I was glad of the media policy of the CFB at that point. They've been nothing but helpful to me in the past little while.

Here are my better shots from this morning's practice:

A not-first first post

I’ve been maintaining this photo blog for nearly a year now, but I now have a legitimate class assignment related to it. I'm supposed to be introspective, so here goes.

When we were assigned this post, about who we are as photographers and maybe an explanation of how we got here, I frankly had no clue what to write. I don’t have a great photographic journey with generations of family whose lives were played out in darkrooms and art galleries. In fact, with the exception of one aunt who lives on an island and paints massive, abstract canvases, my family is fairly scientifically-minded and not really one to cater to the namby-pamby world of the arts.

This says nothing about my own photographic journey though, other than to say that I have no photographic history. I’ve never set foot in a darkroom and only seriously picked up a camera in 2008. I was a book-smart student all through school, acing the early grades, skipping grade six, and eventually graduating from a highly academic high school with an International Baccalaureate diploma. I did no optional courses other than band class. I yearned to do the creative things: participating on yearbook, taking an art class.

The day after my high school graduation, June 2005.

But that was considered verboten. To my parents (and really to me, through years of being told that art was good for toddlers learning what their hands were but useless for jobs) art was a weekend activity. I had to follow in the footsteps of my siblings: a PhD-level biotechnologist, a math/science teacher, and a research fellow in public health were the career paths of my three older siblings. Science was where the jobs were, where the future was.

So that’s what I did. Four years later, I graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in biological sciences. I had a minor in mathematics, something that boggled my friends. Why math? Why not, is my typical response. I loved the ability to solve a problem. I’m convinced this is why I enjoy photography. When I line things up, compose things properly, and get that image, the right image, I feel the exact same as when I finally solved that partial differential equation.

University convocation, with my parents, June 2009.

Science got me nowhere. I could go into the gory details of failed jobs and unhappiness, but I won’t. The only credit I’ll give myself for doing that degree is that it made me realize that I wanted to so something different.

I lived in Scotland for a year after graduating university, trying to figure out what I wanted. I travelled and worked a grim hospital job, cleaning up biological fluids and dealing with the drunks of the night.

Portobello beach, Edinburgh. December 2009. (Seagulls, not sensor spots.)
Hogmanay celebrations, December 2009. First event I ever shot in a photojournalistic manner.

I knew things had to change, and so I turned to my second calling, something that actually interested me a bit.

And there it was. I looked into a way that I could use non-portrait photography to make a living. Funnily enough, I remember wanting to be an editor when I was young; this might be the closest I get. Loyalist, with its personal level of teaching photojournalism, is where I feel I should be. Of course, I get frustrated with assignments and my overly strong need for perfection often causes me to never be happy with a shot, but I know this is something I want to do, for once. This was cemented this past summer when I worked a 12-week internship for two weekly newspapers in Alberta, the Strathmore Standard and Hanna Herald.

My front pages from the summer.

I rarely mention what brought me here because it’s nothing exciting. I could talk about what I like shooting, like sports, documentary, and news events. I could even talk about what I have less of a fondness for (portraits, babies cooing, cheque presentations), but this is more about my journey here. It’s one that took some very long, expensive wrong turns, but one that I know ended up in the right place at the right time.

Election night: PC win (in this riding)

After weeks of listening to people promise me things (even though I can't vote for them), today was the big day. Ontario provincial election, with my riding of Prince Edward - Hastings considered one of the tight ones.

I gambled on which party to go to, and somehow I gambled right. We went to Todd Smith's party at the Belleville Club (known for its swankiness and horrible lighting) and he showed up early to watch the numbers come in. It was surprisingly lacking photoj students. As it became more and more apparent that he was going to win the riding, I was glad we were in the right place. Apparently the Liberal MPP for the riding, Leona Dombrowsky, didn't even show up at her headquarters until after the results were known. What a shame for the few students who went to cover that.

Anyway, it was an exciting win for Smith, MPP. He has a vibrant young family and is well-known in the area. Congratulations to him, and good luck in Queen's Park.

Tim Hudak (and more!)

I have shot so many events, portraits, sports, and more over the past couple of weeks that I hardly know where to begin. So I will try to stay on course here for a bit, but if I wander off, it's because everything is so scattered right now.

For my documentary photo class, we are completing a project called Sense of Belonging, where you photograph five subjects who are somehow related in a group. My original project involved portraits of military families, but this got tied up in the red tape of CFB Trenton. While their public affairs officers (after gentle nudging emails and phone calls) have gotten me remarkably far, the fact that I have to wait for the subjects themselves to contact me is a bit frustrating. I will be shooting my third and fourth subject later this week, but it won't be in time for the deadline. Here are the first two.

AMELIASBURGH, Ont. (25/09/11) - Captain Paul McKinley is surrounded by his wife Andréa, daughter Amélia, 1, and son Kurtis, 7, at their home near Ameliasburgh on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011. Captain McKinley recently returned from a search and rescue mission in Jamaica and previously served as an air force pilot in Bosnia. "When I'm gone, I miss the chaos and the solitude. I miss my family and the ability to do things on my own time. And I miss my coffee. You can get coffee anywhere you go, but it's never as good as the coffee I can make at home, here, in my kitchen." Photo by Rachel Psutka.
BELLEVILLE, Ont. (30/09/11) - Captain Adam Ackerson sits in his new home in Belleville with his wife Jo and their son Ethan, almost 3, on Friday, Sept. 30, 2011. Captain Ackerson recently returned from a mission to Cyprus, where he flies military planes in the retrieval of equipment from Afghanistan. Ackerson and his family recently moved to Belleville after living in Cold Lake, Alta., another large military base. "When I'm gone, I miss my family the most. I miss milestones. It's always nice to return. The day after I got back from Cyprus, Ethan broke his leg. That's the sort of welcome I get." Photo by Rachel Psutka.

Instead of these families making it into my final project, I went to Plan C (Plan B was horrible), and shot a strongman competition at the Mohawk Fair in Shannonville.

This is just the beginning.” Photo by Rachel Psutka.
So that's documentary, for now. I also have a pile of sports photos, but I'll save that for another time. I'm following the Wellington Dukes on a long-term news assignment, so I will have some good shots from that (hopefully) over time.

Lastly, today was an interesting day for local politics. I made the trip up to Madoc as I read that Tim Hudak would be doing a photo op on his way through the area to Peterborough, and was pleasantly surprised to see no other photographers there. Always what we want to see!
